April 14 - Slow Flight
The plan was to practise dual slow flight out in the practice area today, then send me solo tomorrow, on Sunday morning. Alas, the weather -- as usual -- did not cooperate for Sunday, so no solo to follow up this lesson. But we did manage to get out on Saturday and fly slowly. :)The air was smooth, perfect for slow flight, and due to the light rain showers we encountered here and there, not a lot of other students nearby.
1. HASEL
2. power back to below abilty to sustain alt
3. pull back control column, wait for AS to drop, then add power (lots, as it turns out!) to maintain alt
- stall warning horn, slugglish controls, tendency to yaw to left (contol with right rudder)
Recovery is full power and carb heat cold, holding the control column forward slightly, then raise flaps, if any, in stages, pulling back the controls and trimming as necessary.
This was the first time I had really had the opportunity to see Tatiana's precision flying outside the circuit (Korkka is now officially employed "up north", and Tatiana is "officially" my new instructor), and wow, she's pretty GOOD!!! She demo'd some turns in slow flight, and stayed within 30 ft... then made me do the same, twice (I managed to stay within 100 ft both times, lol!) And afterwards, she demo'd some other upper air stuff, and that was impressive, too. I guess Korkka's not the only good instructor out there. ;-P
With any luck, I'll consolidate my learning with a solo sometime this week after work. Otherwise, will have to do some more dual again first, which might not be so bad, since my landing Saturday morning was fairly crappy, given the ideal weather conditions!! (I think I am still flaring too high, i.e. too soon... need to get a better feel for that.)
