March 1, 2011 - Horrible Cross Wind Landings
Wind was 220 at 20, gusting up to 30 this evening, so it seemed like a good time to squeeze in a few circuits before Ground School (which I am attending for the second time 'round).
YIKES, though, I cannot believe the impact of wind. My approaches were complete shit, and I kept forgetting to flare properly (must remember to watch the end of the runway -- not stare inside or just outside the plane). Just kind of wierd flaring to the side/angled. I guess I just need more practise.
At first I was very upset with myself about the crappiness of my flying, but then I thought.... hey, at least I was "comfortable" in the plane. Although I wasn't super confident, I was at least not white-knuckled like I used to be!!! In fact, despite the major wind, I was more irritated than scared. So, I guess that is progress. Right?
So... need to remember a couple of things:
- consider wind when turning crosswind during curcuits (head into wind to track along circuit)
- line up with the centre of the runway -- use aileron and then don't be shy with rudder
- although I am sideways, I still need to flare -- KEEP MY GAZE ON THE END OF THE RUNWAY!!!
Also confused about wind on the ground... still not sure I totally get where the ailerons are supposed to be. Argh! I am so spatially challenged!!!
