June 5, 2011 - Upper Air Review
WOW!!! Remember Upper Air Work??? Well, today I had to! After months of circuit training and some soloing in the circuit, it was time to get out to the practise area and revisit slow flight, stalls, steep turns and spiral dives. I kind of had forgotten a lot of this, but it did come back fairly quickly, once the drama of the radio and all the circuit details (crosswind, downwind checks, reduce speed, turn base, flaps down, try not to overshoot final turn, stay aligned with the runway, etc., etc., etc.) were removed, and I could concentrate on the exercises. Definately need more practise, but one memorable moment was when I actually completed a steep turn 360 degrees, and only lost 50 ft of altitude. Not bad for someone who used to be afraid of steep turns and could only do them with her eyes closed, lol!
The best part of the day was that I got to fly twice!!! After taking the boys downtown to watch a show, I decided the weather was too nice not to take advantage of, and we had our first flight together, in a 172!
